DAVID WALLIAMS had a problem bringing new series Partners In Crime to TV he didn’t want to be too funny.
It’s the latest Agatha Christie project to make the transition to the small screen and follows the adventures of crime-fighting husband and wife, Tommy and Tuppence Beresford.
“Trying to get the tone right, especially when starting something new, is very interesting,” said Britain’s Got Talent judge David, who plays Tommy.
“We didn’t want it to be the same as Poirot and Miss Marple and we wanted some humour in it, but not too much.
“I thought there should be some, but at the same time when someone dies we want it to be horrifying.
“So we were conscious of treading the line between it being funny and it being dark and dangerous, too.”
Call The Midwife star Jessica Raine is Tuppence and Christie fan David acts as producer and was responsible for bringing it to the BBC.
“I was about 10 when I watched Murder On The Orient Express with Albert Finney and I absolutely loved it,” he explains.
“I was so taken aback by the twist at the end. Being a child, I hadn’t read the book so I just thought it was one of the most extraordinary things.
“From that moment, I became a fan and have loved the TV adaptations over the years.
“I was lucky enough to be in The Body In The Library, the first Miss Marple story in the new block of them.
“I was thinking about what I would really love to do and I realised Tommy and Tuppence had been quite neglected.
“It felt like the most incredible opportunity.”
