The popular actor, who died in January, aged 69, plays a senior British army officer overseeing an operation to seize a British citizen in Kenya.
The mission suddenly escalates from a “capture” to a “kill” operation when it’s discovered the wanted terrorist is about to lead a deadly suicide mission.
Meanwhile, from his base in Nevada, American drone pilot Steve Watts (Breaking Bad’s Aaron Paul) is poised to destroy the safehouse when a nine-year-old girl enters the kill zone.
With unforeseen collateral damage now entering the equation, the impossible decision of when to strike gets passed up the chain of politicians and lawyers.
“Who has the power to make that decision, to press that button?” says screenwriter Guy Hibbert.
“Is it the politicians, the general in London, the general in the US, or is it the commander over in Kenya?
“The people about to be killed include a Kenyan, two Brits and an American, so who makes the decision?”
The film, which also stars Helen Mirren, is dedicated to Rickman’s memory.
Eye in the Sky is in cinemas now.
