Richard Osman and his “TV husband” Alexander Armstrong have been signed up for another 165 daytime episodes, which will see them sail past the milestone.

There will also be 45 more celebrity episodes, which by our calculations – at 8 celebrities an episode – means the challenge is now on to find 360 famous faces for the primetime edition.

Alex said he couldn’t even express how “exciting” the news was.

“I imagine it’s probably fairly obvious how much we love making it – but to pass the 1,000th episode mark is a great tribute to a show that so many people work so hard on. Long may it prosper!” he said.

And Richard added: “I’m so delighted that the ridiculous rise and rise of Pointless continues. I can’t wait to get back into the studio with my TV husband Xander.

“I’m also excited to see what our sneaky producers have got lined up for our 1,000th episode. ”

Pointless is one of Britain’s favourite game shows, playing on the nation’s most obscure knowledge.

The show pulls in an average of 3.29 million viewers an episode and long will it continue with the record commission, BBC Daytime’s biggest ever.

That special 1,000th show will air on BBC One later this year.
