The show has been yet another massive hit for the BBC, pulling in more than six million viewers each week.
So it’s hardly surprising that production is just about to start on the next series, remarkably the 20th.
But David Caves, who plays one of the team of crime-solving forensic experts, reckons the secret to the success is actually pretty simple.
“We all love a mystery and we all love trying to put the pieces of the puzzle together to work out whodunit,” says David.
“It has a very technical side with the post-mortems, the pathology and the forensics.
“And people tune in to see the regular cast and what’s happening with them and their relationships. They love the characters and the stories, I think.”

Silent Witness star Emilia Fox still loves catching criminals
Northern Irish actor David has been playing action man pathologist Jack Hodgson for the past three years and he’s still thrilled to be involved.
“It was a whirlwind thing for me initially,” he admits.
“I’d not done any television, so to be brought in as a regular character in a show of that calibre was amazing.
“It takes quite a while to embed yourself because it’s so established and people are used to the regular characters. Then one goes away and you come in and fill that space.
“It takes people quite a while to get on board, but I feel like they’re doing that more now with Jack as a character.”
This two-parter is an all-action affair with Jack and Emilia Fox’s Nikki in real danger.
“Jack and Nikki are on the run,” explains David.
“So there are lots of scenes with us trampling through the woods, running for our lives and fleeing gunmen.”
Silent Witness, BBC1, Monday, 9pm.
