ALEJANDRO BEDOYA has urged Rangers to snap up giant defender Oguchi Onyewu, insisting his former international team-mate will be a monster hit in the Premiership.
Onyewu, 34, is on trial at Rangers’ Charleston training camp, hoping to convince Mark Warburton to offer him a deal.
Former Ranger Bedoya is thrilled for his old mate and feels the former AC Milan, Sporting Lisbon and Standard Liege centre back Onyewu could be as influential as Madjid Bougherra.
The Nantes winger said: “When you see ‘Gooch’ for the first time, you would think he was an American football player. He is a monster!
“He’s got a massive physical presence. He has great stature, he is very strong and he is a great header of the ball.
“However, it’s not all about strength and defending with Gooch because he can also play the ball out from the back.
“He can really control the penalty area and, of course, he is also a great guy to have for set pieces at the other end.
“I haven’t seen him play for a while because he had an injury but I’m delighted he is getting a chance to show what he can do with Rangers.
“It’s a fantastic opportunity for him and I hope he can convince the coaches that he can do a job because I’m certain he would be a big success.
“He is a great leader too, the way he handles himself on the pitch.
“Gooch is also a really good communicator and you can never have enough leaders in your team.
“Of course, he is a really experienced guy having played all over Europe and with the US national team in huge matches.
“So I don’t think he will have a problem imposing his play in Scotland where it is quite physical.
“I would definitely recommend him if Rangers asked me.”
