WHAT can be said about holidays in Italy that hasn’t been said a million times before?
It’s one of my favourite places on earth and each time I visit, I discover something new about either the country, its people…or myself.
For many years, Italy has been a cultural and romantic paradise for tourists. Up and down the entire country, take your pick from lakeside towns, fascinating cities and quaint, sleepy villages all rolled into a timeless culture.
One of the most diverse and beautiful landscapes in Europe, Italy has it all and visitors fall under her spell so much that they return year after year.
Sometimes as visitors to bella Italia, we’re in such a rush to tick off the famous historical sights of the cities that we forget there’s also some cracking beach resorts that are just crying out for a bucket and spade.
Yes, Italy is teeming with culture and history but don’t be afraid to just go for a sunshine fortnight and laze on a beach.
Sure, it would be a shame to miss some of the glorious attractions and architectural masterpieces of the big cities but why not just soak up the atmosphere of Italy’s coastal gems and hit the beach.
Besides, some of the beaches we’ve chosen are within easy reach of bigger towns and cities so if you feel the need to get off your deckchair and swap your bucket and spade for the Basilicas, you can.
The point is, we all need some down time to just be and lying on a pretty beach is an ideal way to recharge your batteries.
Some of the best seaside resorts can be found on the Adriatic Coast and the Tuscan Coast although there are loads more up and down the length of the country. Here’s our TOP 7 to help you make up your mind.
Forte dei Marmi
Upmarket beach resort where the seafront is manned by lifeguards. The pretty beach is well organized with loungers, deckchairs, umbrellas and snack bars
Viareggio
This classic Italian beach resort feels slightly grander than some of the others as the sandy shore sits in the shadow of Belle Époque villas and elegant hotels.
Rimini
Probably the most famous of Italy’s beach resorts, Rimini gets pretty crowded in the summer months and has a bustling, lively atmosphere.
Find your perfect holiday
Cattolica
The beach at Cattolica offers stunning views across the Adriatic Sea and this chic resort is the perfect place to stay if you want to enjoy days of sunbathing and water sports
Lido di Camaiore
A laid back yet fashionable spot on the Tuscan Riviera. The beach runs for 4km between Viareggio and Pietrasanta. The city of Pisa is also nearby.
Elba Island
The island of Elba lies between the Tyrrhenian and Ligurian seas and is home to many gorgeous beaches along its pristine shore and the crystal clear waters are ideal for scuba diving.
Lido di Jesolo
In the northeast of Italy on the Adriatic Sea, Lido di Jesolo is billed as the Venetian Riviera and it’s perfectly placed for day trips to Venice if you feel the need for an injection of culture.
