My favourite Holiday Gordon Kennedy

Actor Gordon Kennedy says Europe’s great, but nothing beats Iona.

Whether it’s comedy, action, drama or horror, actor Gordon Kennedy has done it all.

He burst on our screens as part of the Scots comedy sketch show Absolutely on Channel 4 in 1989, before appearing as a regular contributor to TV travel show Wish You Were Here?

He went on to star in BBC Scotland soap River City and in 2006 appeared in Saturday night hit adventure Robin Hood, as the tough-but-sensitive Little John.

Gordon stars in The Borderlands, which is out on DVD tomorrow. It’s a creepy horror set in the West Country. He plays Deacon, a paranormal investigator battling the forces of evil.

He tells The Sunday Post where his favourite holiday destinations are.

“My dad was in NATO and, when I was younger, he worked in Paris and Brussels.

He would save up his holiday time and we would travel around Europe.

At first it was tents before we moved on to caravans and we’d go to places like the South of France and Austria.

They were nice places, but I loved going up the west coast of Scotland, to Iona.

It was beautiful, with absolutely stunning landscapes.

What I remember is the place being nearly deserted there weren’t any cars.

It only took two days of running around the wilderness before my two brothers and I went completely native.

We would play cowboys and Indians and swim in the sea before settling down with Mum and Dad to have a picnic.

I loved playing golf with my brothers on Iona. The courses were basic a couple of tee boxes and some plastic flags but we got by.

Golfing is still something I find the time for these days but I don’t get to play when I go away with my wife, Susan.

We try to go all over Europe to soak up the sights and experience some of the food and culture, often with friends.

Our boys are grown up now they’re 19 and 21 and have gone off to university.

It was nice to get away with them again recently. We visited Budapest. It’s a wonderful, historic city. I enjoyed visiting and not having to work.

It’s where we filmed Robin Hood, but of course I couldn’t relax with the family as much as I can these days.

I was lucky enough to see a lot of the world with the TV programme Wish You Were Here?

The family and I went to places like Portugal and Italy and we got really used to that.

It got to the stage where we would go somewhere ourselves and the boys would ask when the film crew were turning up!

The best place we got to go to was Zambia in Africa. We visited the magnificent Victoria Falls and stayed in wonderful five star accommodation. There’s no way we’d have been able to afford to visit there!

I’d love to visit South America. It’s the great undiscovered continent for me. We’ll perhaps get there in the next couple of years.

Other than that, I love to visit the Western Isles it really reminds me of my youth.

Filming for The Borderlands was done in different parts of the West Country, down near Devon.

It’s lovely and very picturesque, although I’m not sure we’ve made it look that nice in the movie!”
