At the end of any marathon I have ever taken part in, I crossed the finishing line looking as though I’d been dragged backwards through every hedge in the United Kingdom.
So I can only watch in awe as women like model Nell McAndrew and singer Katherine Jenkins glide through the race like gazelles and end with nothing more than a slight glow about them.
But I think it was horribly unfair that Katherine came in for criticism after raising thousands of pounds for the Macmillan cancer charity in the London Marathon, just because she happened to look unruffled and beautiful at the end of 26 and a half miles.
The reason she looked so good is because she is a bonny woman. She wasn’t red-faced, grimacing in agony (like I was), because she is very fit.
It was simply mean-spirited to have a go at her.
I take my hat off to Katherine and all of those who took part in the London marathon, as well as all of the thousands who lined the streets to cheer them on especially as the race went ahead under the shadow of the bombings in Boston.
They ran their hearts out and raised a fortune for charity. Congratulations, one and all.
