What next for Wayne Rooney?
On the surface, it looks tough to predict. One minute he’s asking to leave Manchester United, the next the club are using him to promote their new kit. You’ve got Arsene Wenger publicly praising him, admitting he’d take him to Arsenal in a heartbeat, and you’ve also got the owners of Paris St Germain openly courting him.
For me, the thing that was always going to get in the way of Wayne leaving Old Trafford was money. There just aren’t that many clubs in the world who can afford the 20 or 30-million quid it would take to prise him away and his £13-million-a-year wages. But there’s no doubt PSG’s Qatari owners can manage that.
And now Arsenal Chief Executive Ivan Gazedis has revealed the club have an extra £70-million-per-year to spend on players, the Gunners are clearly capable of shelling out. But as credible as both clubs are, there’s only one place I can see Wayne Rooney playing his football next season Old Trafford. And I reckon David Moyes will make it his business to turn him back into the devastating striker we all know he can be.
It will take some serious coaching because we all know Wayne gets frustrated when he’s not getting the service he wants. That’s when he starts dropping into midfield. Sir Alex Ferguson clearly thought he had potential in that position. But, for me, he’s not a midfielder and he never will be. He’s a centre-forward.
That’s what he was when he burst onto the scene at Everton as a teenager. That’s what he was when he won his move to Manchester United. And that’s what he’ll be again if Davie Moyes gets his way.
The two are set to sit down together over the coming days to thrash out a way forward. For all the acrimony between the pair, I think they’ll bury the hatchet because both will realise they can help each other.
Moyes wants Rooney scoring goals for United and Rooney wants to be the main man again. His goal for England against Brazil last Sunday proved he’s still got the ability to do the business against the very best. And if he and Moyes can work together at Old Trafford, I’ve no doubt whatsoever that they’ll both get what they’re looking for.
