For some, being an identical twin just doubles the fun others reckon they lose half a life because of it!
A new one-off TV documentary, Twintervention, shows the different ways some twins feel about each other and having someone who looks and acts just like them by their side from the cradle to the grave.
As a twin myself (mine’s a very un-identical sister!), I know that being one gets you lots of attention when you’re little.
But for identical adult twins, it can be a struggle to assert your personality, to show you really are a unique individual and don’t have to be just like your sibling.
“It took us many years just to realise we were different, not just the same person,” admits Debbie, one of the Britton twins. “Everything was always us together.”
It’s noticeable how often the twins’ spouses or partners complain that they want to see more of them alone, without the other twin there it seems that it really is hard for identical twins to go their separate ways.
“I would rather be with my twin than anybody else,” says Debbie Britton proudly. “I am six minutes older than Lisa and I never let her forget that!”
Sister Lisa stresses: “Debbie is definitely the dominant twin, because she was born first.
“You know that way you leave your mobile phone at home, and you feel kind of vulnerable without it?
“Well, that’s how we feel when we are apart!” they shout in unison, which is quite spooky to see they often say the same thing at the same time.
Like many of the twins in the show, they share everything, even their underwear, and Debbie and Lisa spend 16 hours a day together.
“Growing up,” says Lisa, “our mother would dress us the same, but give Debbie a slightly darker shade of the same outfit. So it became Debbie Dark and Lisa Light.
“As we got older, we started switching our clothes, just to trick her!”
Debbie really broke the ties when she married Alistair or, rather, she tried to break them but failed spectacularly.
“Their relationship is completely different from ordinary sisters,” admits Alistair, who had to give in when his new wife insisted her identical twin come and live with them.
Confusing for him, when they still dress alike!
“It’s amazing that Debbie found Alistair, and I see how happy she is,” admits Lisa.
Having found a fella of her own, Joe, she wants to settle down, too.
As Joe’s insisted he’ll only marry her if they buy a house of their own and she sees less of Debbie, there may be rocky times ahead.
For the Harold twins, like the others, a little “twintervention” is needed those around them, girlfriends and pals, just wish they could get to see one of the lads without the other being present.
But, as Thomas and Jonathan dress identically all the time, it can be really tricky just to know they really are with the right brother!
Twintervention is on Discovery’s TLC Channel, Tuesday, June 25 at 10pm.
