She’s cleaned up in the housing market, now the TV property guru wants to clean up the country too.
The mum-of-four is backing the Krcher Cleans Britain campaign, which aims to encourage folk to tackle the litter problem in their local areas. And it’s a cause that’s very close to her heart.
Property Ladder star Sarah is incensed by the amount of public money wasted on clearing up after the litter louts. In fact, she has been known to go up to people and politely suggest that they take their rubbish home.
“I’m not brave enough to say, ‘What are you doing making a mess?’,” she admits, “so I usually start by saying ‘I’m so sorry, I think you’ve dropped something’.
“I think it’s a shame that many people are nervous of tackling things like this because really, we’re all part of a big family, and we shouldn’t feel scared.”
June is Love Where You Live month. The campaign is a joint venture between Keep Britain Tidy and cleaning equipment giants Krcher. Sarah and the Krcher Cleans Britain team want groups of friends and local communities to help tidy up our villages, towns and cities. But she reckons she might struggle in her own home.
Sarah, 41, admits it’s an uphill battle to get her four young sons to tidy up after themselves.
“They’re learning gradually,” she explains. “They start getting the message around four years old and you have to keep drumming it in.”
Sarah, who met her husband Graham when she was 18, admits that dealing with Billy, eight, Charlie, seven, Rafferty, four, and Laurie, three, can require “a certain skill in crowd control”. “At times it’s like dealing with boisterous puppies,” she adds. “Fortunately, they get on well.”
Sarah has been a regular on TV since the first Property Ladder series in 2001. As well as presenting shows such as Britain’s Best Homes and Help, My House Is Falling Down.
“I have a record of all my pregnancies,” she says, “because they have featured in various programmes over the years I can relive them at any time!”
Combining family life and a busy TV schedule didn’t stop her from finding time to set up two internet businesses as well. Tepilo.com is a property website for those looking to buy, sell or let.
Mysinglefriend.com is a dating website, inspired by Sarah’s long-standing habit of setting her single friends up with dates. And she shows no sign of slowing down just yet.
“I’m always saying I’ll cut back,” she says, “but the thing is, I like a challenge and I love new projects.”
