Boyzone star reckons he’s past being a Strictly sensation.
Westlife’s Nicky Byrne made it to the latter rounds last year but fellow Irishman Shane reckons it’s too late to tango.
“I’d have loved to do it a few years ago but I don’t know if I’m getting a bit too old,” Shane told The Sunday Post.
“If I do something I want to win it but there are a lot of younger, fitter people who can win that programme.
“I might just find it too difficult. Nicky did fantastic but I’ve got a few years on him I’m his boozy uncle.
“I’m nearly 40 and when I saw how hard he worked it really made me think that maybe it was beyond me.”
Shane, who triumphed in Channel 4’s The Games a few years back, would fancy putting the diving skills he learned to good use in ITV’s hit show Splash!
But he admits he got a TV reality check in the new series of Celebrity MasterChef.
“I’d never seen the show,” confesses Shane. “My wife Sheena said I might enjoy it and I thought I might learn something about cooking.
“My first mistake was that I didn’t see it as a reality show. I didn’t contemplate the heats and knockouts and time pressure.
“I just didn’t give it enough thought or respect.”
Shane says he had to be honest with hosts John Torode and Gregg Wallace that he was out of his culinary depth.
“I went in there with my hands up and said, ‘Look boys, I honestly have no clue what I’m doing here’,” laughs Shane.
“So they gave me a couple of little hints here and there, especially when they saw me standing scratching my head looking at something.
“But it was an amazing experience.”
Shane has a couple of Scots visits coming up, firstly for his motorsport passion of drift racing at Knockhill in Fife.
“I love it. It’s one of the most challenging tracks anywhere.
“I’m obviously not getting the thrill of standing singing in front of 10,000 people all the time now.
“I’ve got to get that kick somewhere else and for me it’s always going to be extreme sports.”
But Boyzone are back for a 20th anniversary tour with a Glasgow Hydro date on December 15.
“When we’re back together it’s like the blink of an eye,” adds Shane.
“The relationship we have is beyond friendship.”
This week’s Celebrity MasterChef sees Shane compete against Brian Capron, Shappi Khorsandi and Miranda Krestovnikoff.
