A Scottish man cheated death after being stabbed in the chest by a taxi driver in Ibiza.
Grant Sommerville, 22, was knifed after catching a cab from one of the island’s famous beach clubs and getting into a row with the driver over the fare. He suffered damage to his spleen in the attack.
A 29-year-old local is being questioned by police after being arrested in the early hours of this morning. He has told officers he acted in self-defence after being attacked.
Grant, thought to be from Motherwell, was rushed to hospital with a stab wound to his chest. The incident happened near the Poniente Playa Hotel in the party resort of San Antonio, just after 1am.
Grant was with two friends he had caught a taxi with in nearby Playa d’en Bossa. The driver fled the scene after the attack.
Paramedics stabilised the injured man on the pavement before taking him to hospital.
His condition was described as “serious” when he was first admitted but he was moved to a ward yesterday after improving. The taxi driver being questioned is thought to be based in Ibiza’s capital, Ibiza Town.
He has not been named fully, only identified by his first name and the initials of his two surnames Antonio M.P as is normal in Spain.
Civil Guard officers confirmed the arrest yesterday and released a picture of the knife.
A spokesman said: “The victim was a young Brit aged 22 who had been stabbed in the chest and was with two friends when officers arrived.
“They were under the effects of alcohol and said the attack had taken place after a row over the taxi fare.
“The arrested man has said that, after picking up the three men, they rowed with him over the fare and attacked him and he defended himself with a multi-use tool knife he had in his car.”
It’s understood Grant is due to leave the island on Wednesday.
