Ahead of Bafta Night, we look at who is in the running for the awards and who we think will win.
The Nominees are…
Best Film
Birdman
Boyhood
The Grand Budapest Hotel
The Imitation Game
The Theory of Everything
Verdict: With votes for The Imitation Game and The Theory Of Everything likely to be cast in the Outstanding British Film category, Boyhood the ambitious project about a boy growing up, shot with all the same cast over a period of 12 years may come of age.
Leading Actor
Benedict Cumberbatch (The Imitation Game)
Eddie Redmayne (The Theory Of Everything)
Jake Gyllenhaal (Nightcrawler)
Michael Keaton (Birdman)
Ralph Fiennes (Grand Budapest Hotel)
Verdict: Eddie and Benedict could split the home vote allowing Michael Keaton to wing his way in and snatch the trophy. but take it as red, it’s Eddie’s to lose.
Leading Actress
Amy Adams (Big Eyes)
Felicity Jones (The Theory Of Everything)
Julianne Moore (Still Alice)
Reese Witherspoon (Wild)
Rosamund Pike (Gone Girl)
Verdict: Rosamund Pike is brilliant in Gone Girl but the Bafta will most likely go to Julianne Moore, even though few people have seen her performance. She plays a university professor diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in a film which is not out in the UK until March 6.
Outstanding British Film
The Theory of Everything
’71
The Imitation Game
Paddington
Pride
Under The Skin
Verdict: Eddie Redmayne might pip his buddy Benedict Cumberbatch to the acting honours but The Imitation Game star can console himself in the knowledge he starred in the better Brit film.
Supporting Actor
Steve Carell (Foxcatcher)
Edward Norton (Birdman)
Ethan Hawke (Boyhood)
J.K. Simmons (Whiplash)
Mark Ruffalo (Foxcatcher)
Verdict: Steve Carell has been nominated for Best Leading Actor at the Oscars for the same role, but J. K. Simmons’ perfectionist music instructor in Whiplash is the most memorable performance of the five.
Supporting Actress
Emma Stone (Birdman)
Imelda Staunton (Pride)
Keira Knightley (The Imitation Game)
Patricia Arquette (Boyhood)
Rene Russo (Nightcrawler)
Verdict: Rene Russo disappeared from acting for a decade before returning with aplomb in Nightcrawler. Patricia Arquette spent even longer on Boyhood, a fact more likely to earn her recognition.
