Stuart McCall would love to see Newcastle United loanee Haris Vuckic become a permanent signing at Rangers.
The Slovenian has been the one positive to emerge from the deal that saw five players arrive at Ibrox from the English side.
He is one of only two to have seen action, and the revelation that Rangers, as part of the deal, must pay the Magpies £500,000 if they gain promotion has caused outrage amongst the fans.
Vuckic has scored five goals since coming to Scotland, and McCall has been impressed with his performances and attitude.
He said: “If I was around next year, then he would be a player that I would be interested in and the club would be interested in.
“He’s a good type as well. He always has a smile on his face and wants to do extra in training.”
Burnley are said to have been impressed by Vuckic but, like Rangers, don’t know which League they will be playing in next season.
McCall believes that players are still excited by the prospect of joining the Light Blues, despite their recent troubles.
He went on: “I’m getting four or five agents a week offering us players who’d like to come to Rangers. This club is still a big attraction. And in the future I don’t think it’ll be a case of people coming here for the money.
“The salaries will be reasonable, but players coming here will be coming because they want to play for the club.
“Maybe if we’re still in the Championship that will have an effect. But from the agents I’ve spoken to, they’ve said it won’t matter what League Rangers are in.”
Today McCall’s side will give Championship winners Hearts a guard of honour before their match at Ibrox.
He said: “At Motherwell, we gave three guards of honour. On the opening day up at Ross County a couple of years ago, we clapped them on because they had just been promoted and played a terrible 0-0.
“We clapped on Kilmarnock after they won the League Cup down there and got beat 3-0.
“Then we clapped Celtic on and won 3-1.
“Hearts had theirs against Queen of the South last week, but it’s only right in their first away game.”
Meanwhile Dean Shiels is clearly delighted by the changes introduced by McCall at Ibrox.
Previous managers Ally McCoist and Kenny McDowall found it hard to find a place for him in their team.
“If you speak to any footballer who’s not playing, it’s very difficult,” Shiels admits. “I’ve trained immensely hard, so when the weekend comes and you’re not playing, it’s disappointing.
“I’m not going to go into details but I am probably a better player now than I was when I signed for Rangers.
“I’m older and more comfortable. I feel as confident as I did the day I came in.
“I’m not going to criticise anyone. I’m not looking at the past, only to the future.
“Maybe in a way I have been given a second chance at Rangers.
“I just feel the new manager has given me a lift. He’s given a few of us a lift.
“We go through a lot of work and there’s a different session every day on how to prepare for the weekend’s game.
“There’s a lot of in-depth detail, and it’s very clear what is asked of us when we go out over the line.”
