John Swinney has slammed the widening salary gulf between bosses and workers as “unjustifiable”.
The Scottish Finance Secretary said the next UK Government should look into addressing the growing gap with new regulations.
Figures published last year show directors of the top 100 listed UK companies now earn 120 times the average sum earned by their employees.
Addressing an SNP campaign meeting last week, Mr Swinney said: “When I started my working life, the relationship between average salaries and senior leadership salaries might have been a factor of maybe 8 to 1.
“Now it is likely to be 300 to 1. And that is unjustifiable.
“I often think to myself, what do you actually do between nine and five that merits that kind of remuneration, what is it you actually do?
“Then you see in the banking sector, some of the people in that financial bracket, behaving absolutely abominable.
He added; “Some of this you might be able to address by regulation in terms of relationships with salaries and that certainly should be explored.”
