A drunken motorist told police to arrest him for getting behind the wheel while under the influence, an Irish court was told.

The Dublin Evening Herald reported that Eric Fowler, 34, said to officers who stopped him: “I’ve been drinking and driving. Arrest me.” He admitted the offence when he appeared at Blanchardstown District Court.

Garda Tara Byrne said they were on patrol in Mulhuddart when they saw a black Volkswagen Golf ‘driving erratically’ and stopped it. The Herald reported that Fowler then urged police to arrest him as he’d got behind the wheel after an event at his sister’s house.

When the car valeter, of Blakestown Cottages, Dublin, was breathalysed, he gave a reading of 60 micrograms of alcohol per 100ml of breath. In the Republic of Ireland, it’s illegal for anyone with more than two years of driving experience to have above 22 micrograms per 100ml of breath when behind the wheel. For novice drivers, it’s nine micograms.

Fowler was fined €500 (circa £449) and disqualified from driving for two years.
