The Light Blues were all set to celebrate when Raith Rovers scored a dramatic last-minute equaliser at Stark’s Park, Kirkcaldy.
Rangers had fought their way to a 3-2 lead with strikes from Harry Forrester (30 minutes), Michael O’Halloran (35) and Kenny Miller (49).
With Hibs dropping points at St Mirren, the return to the top flight looked within their grasp and the Bears within the 6.943 crowd had started their victory chants.
But Harry Panayiotou, the Saint Kitts and Nevis international who is on-loan from English Premier League club Leicester City then took a hand.
The 21-year-old missed a penalty in the last few minutes, but then tucked away a dramatic equaliser for Raith in the fourth minute of injury time.
Mark Warburton’s men entertain Dumbarton at Ibrox on Tuesday, when they can clinch the title.
