The friend of a young dad who died on holiday is honouring a poignant pledge to care for his pal’s family.
Grant Mulholland and Liam Stewart vowed they would each do everything in their power to look after the other man’s family “if anything terrible ever happened”.
Now, devastated Grant has found himself fulfilling the promise he made after tragic Liam died on a sunshine family holiday.
The 26-year-old, from Dundee, was in Majorca last week with his wife Nicky and two young sons, Kayden and baby Sonny, when he passed away suddenly. In a touching tribute to his best mate, Grant said he was “true to his word”, adding: “Me and Liam had a pact that we’d always take care of each other’s family.”
Grant, 30, a part-time college lecturer and shop owner, is devastated by his best friend’s death. Speaking from his Dundee shop, The Incredible Roll Inn, he said: “This has been very hard for everyone to take and so it’s very difficult to speak about.
“I am too distressed at the moment to explain how we feel. We all are, especially Nicky and the family.
“In time, I hope we will be able to cope better, but, for now, I am getting on with fundraising for Nicky and the boys.”
The Dundee and Angus College worker has already launched an online appeal to support distraught Nicky and her family. It raised £8,287 in just 12 hours last week, wildly beyond his expectations. It is expected to raise thousands more.
Grant was godfather to Sonny. He explained he will do everything he can to look after Liam’s family “because I love them all very much”.
Nicky, a carer, revealed her heartfelt gratitude in a touching Facebook posting: “When you choose godparents for your children, you don’t actually think for a second there’s a chance you’ll ever need them if something bad was to happen to any of you.”
Grant has stated the money raised will be spent on supporting the family and paying for funeral costs. Anything left over will be spent on the children.
Liam was on holiday with family and friends in the resort of Alcudia. They were believed to be staying at a Club MAC hotel.
The UK Government and Foreign and Commonwealth Office confirmed it was aware of Liam’s death.
