McConnell enters the referendum debate

Former First Minister Jack McConnell is set to make his first foray into the Better Together campaign just days after saying the unionist alliance must “raise their game”.

In an address to mark 15 years since the Scottish Parliament was officially reconvened he will pledge to “fight” for devolution and warn of the dangers of increasingly polarised arguments.

McConnell, First Minister from 2001-2007, now Lord McConnell, has kept his distance from the Better Together campaign so far. On Tuesday he will appear under the Better Together banner for the first time.

He said: “I look forward to making the case for devolution as the best system of government for Scotland. The UK is the most successful voluntary union in history.”

And he added: “Since I was 18 I spent day after day, year after year, campaigning for devolution for Scotland and trying to make it work. I’m not going to give up the system of government I believe is best for Scotland just because the current political conditions make people cynical.”

The speech will be the first of a number of interventions by Lord McConnell before polling day.

He’s believed to be planning to use ministers from his former cabinet to help make the case for devolution.
