Springwatch 2015 presenter Iolo Williams reveals secrets about himself and the popular nature programme.
Springwatch important in forming people’s attitudes to nature?
Before it, nature programmes were about tigers and elephants. This is about people’s back gardens. They identify with it more.
Your first language is Welsh. Will Wales ask for independence?
Not a hope. We don’t have the resources Scotland has, nor the tourism, and we lack quality in our MPs.
You’ll be in the Orkneys and Shetlands on TV this week. What makes them special?
As islands, the wildlife is unique. It could be killer whales or little red-necked waders which migrate to the Pacific. The mix will be special.
Besides nature, what excites you?
I used to paraglide, and play rugby, and I’m passionate about the Welsh team. We’ll cuff England and Australia in the World Cup this year.
Hard to practise what you preach with recycling, conservation, etc?
Some of it is, like cutting down my miles on the road. I car share when I can, or use the train. But recycling and turning off TVs and lights is something we can all do.
Global warming or just periodic climate change?
Scientists who’re not paid by vested interests will tell you it’s global warming.
You once said you hate “spineless bureaucrats”. Who did you mean?
I’ve no respect for politicians. Too busy worrying about their careers rather than preserving nature.
Happiest time of your life?
Seeing the pride in my son Dewi’s face as he met his newly-born brother, Thomas.
Saddest time of your life?
Losing our first dog to cancer.
You’ve 24 hours left to live. How do spend them?
I’d go to an Indian restaurant for a really hot curry along with enough beer to get blasted. I wouldn’t even notice it ending!
