“Psychologically, when you’re moving backwards, it makes it tougher to answer the questions.”
Andi Peters will be hoping his new show produces the same reaction with viewers as it does with contestants and lifts them out of their chairs.
The former kids’ telly presenter is back on our screens with a new daytime quiz show, Ejector Seat.
The concept is all in the name, with six contestants sitting in seats that move back with each incorrect answer, until they’re tipped backwards and out of their chair.
“When they showed me the concept, I immediately wanted to do it,” said the 43-year-old.
“For the people in series one it’s even more daunting, because no one has seen the show and nobody knows what’s going to happen.
“Psychologically, when you’re moving backwards, it makes it tougher to answer the questions.”
It’s a similar seat to the one used in Graham Norton’s chat show, when members of the public have their moment in the Red Chair.
“The Norton chair seems to be held in affection, but I’ve never actually seen it,” adds Andi.
“It’s a simple pleasure, seeing someone being tipped off a chair. In the office, if someone falls off their chair, everyone laughs no matter how often it’s happened.”
Andi now spends most of his time behind the camera as an executive producer.
But he’ll be hoping Ejector Seat is as much of a hit as Big Reunion, the ITV2 show that reunites ’90s pop bands, which he narrates.
“People had no idea it was going to be a hit, but when it’s a surprise it makes it even better,” Andi smiles.
“It’s about nostalgia and our memories of that era. You also see how hard these people work. Would you ever want to join a boy band after seeing the show? I wouldn’t.”
Ejector Seat is on ITV1 weekdays at 4pm.
