Capaldi couldn’t tell daughter he’d won the role.
The daughter of Scots actor Peter Capaldi was “profoundly upset” when she thought her dad had been snubbed to play Doctor Who.
Glaswegian Peter kept only child Cecily, 19, in the dark about becoming the new Time Lord after the show’s bosses swore him to secrecy after he landed the part.
It meant the 55-year-old, who was filming The Musketeers in Prague for the BBC when he found out, did not tell any of his fellow actors or even daughter about landing the dream role.
The star best known as foul-mouthed spin doctor Malcolm Tucker in political satire The Thick Of It only confided in his wife, Elaine Collins, that he was to play the Doctor.
That’s despite the actor having been odds-on favourite to land the role.
He was eventually unveiled as the new Time Lord on a live TV show in August.
Hugo Speer, who stars alongside Capaldi in The Musketeers, said: “He found out in the middle of filming our show.
“He came back from the UK, freshly shorn, and said: ‘Hugo, do you notice anything different about me?’
“I said: ‘Yes, Peter. Your twirly moustache and beard are no longer with us’.
“Even then he still couldn’t elaborate on it.
“His daughter was profoundly upset he had been overlooked to play the new Doctor, even though he knew that he was in the frame for it.”
Last week it was revealed sales of Crombie overcoats had gone intergalactic since the new Doctor Who wears one as part of his signature costume.
Calls to the firm, originally from Aberdeen, about the £795 coat “doubled overnight”.
Capaldi, who lives in London with his wife and Cecily, has previously appeared in Doctor Who, playing a Roman sculptor in 2008 episode called The Fires Of Pompeii.
