Emmerdale The joy of six (weddings)

There’s a wedding double bill on Emmerdale this week.

Charity and Declan and Moira and Cain are set to say “I do” on the same day but will both go ahead? When it comes to nuptials, Emma Atkins’s Charity has six-appeal.

She’s had five marital moments prior to this, not all ending with her making it happily down the aisle. It all makes Emma a bit of an expert on bridal outfits.

And as Charity prepares to tie the knot again, she says she still loves getting into the dresses.

“It’s like being a child dressing up,” laughs 39-year-old Emma. “That urge never leaves you. I’ve never married in real life but my wedding would never mirror the things Charity chooses to do.

“We’re so different, but as an actress, dressing up in lovely outfits and getting my hair and make-up done is fabulous.”

After some of the big bashes in the past, the circumstances this time Charity’s pregnancy and decision to wed Declan regardless of her feelings means a different look.

“The outfit is quite masculine and strong,” reveals Emma. “It’s still very elegant and glamorous, but there’s a hard edge to it and a hard-edged hairstyle to match.

“I think there’s a sense of severity to it which is good for the desperation that is going on in Charity’s mind.”

As a serial bride, Emma knows the downside of filming in a frock our unpredictable climate.

“The weather’s always the worst bit and when it’s cold you can hardly fit thermals under a dress. I was actually lucky this time because this outfit was made of quite a thick material.

“The best bit about wedding filming is the giggles you have. You think some of the dialogue at Charity and Declan’s wedding is almost going too far but soap weddings have to be heightened.

“If they weren’t people would just say that nothing much of interest happened and it was boring.

“She makes quite a grotesque exhibition of herself, but she’s on a mission.”
