A box set featuring all three series of his TV rock comedy, Brian Pern, created by Rhys Thomas, is out now.
Did you “get” the Brian Pern, ex-rock star, character immediately?
No. Rhys had to work hard to get me onside and convince me. I was like: “Really? Is this funny?” Three series later I guess that just shows how much I know.
Did a lot of rock acts want cameo roles?
Yeah, Peter Gabriel (right), Rick Wakeman, Phil Collins, Queen, all loved appearing on the show, and acts like The Zombies asked to be in it but we couldn’t find space.
Is this Brian Pern finished?
I really don’t know as it depends on budgets and the BBC. But we did a one off live show recently, and I’m almost certain we’ll do a tour later this year.
Is UK comedy in rude health?
It’s hit and miss. There’s less money for character-driven comedy now, and even stand-up on TV is limited to just a handful of names.
How seriously do you take your career?
I didn’t used to bother, in fact I was completely aimless. But now I have two kids I’m more serious and I make sure I work a lot harder.
Do you get nervous?
Only if I’m on my own, like when I’m doing stand-up. But if I’m acting there are others around me so it’s easier.
Will your grandkids prefer Brian Pern or The Fast Show?
Depends on how old they are. Younger kids would find The Fast Show (right) funnier, but I’m proud of both.
Do you like doing “straight” acting as much as comedy?
I like doing comedy acting when I’ve written it myself. I find serious acting difficult because I keep telling myself I’m not a straight actor. My wife thinks I do evil roles well though.
How do you look back on the teenage Simon?
With a mixture of sympathy and anger. I could have done so much more for myself, but at other times I was really selfish.
You have 24 hours to live. How do you spend the time?
Floating on a raft down a tropical river with my wife and kids, lying on my back and listening to nature. I’d also have to play a bit of music one last time. It would be Steely Dan.
