Most Wanted Man star Daniel Bruhl is becoming a big name in Hollywood.
In any language 2013 would be described as a breakthrough year for Daniel Bruhl with English-speaking audiences.
Already a star of TV and film in his native Germany, the 36-year-old earned BAFTA and Golden Globe nominations for his role as Niki Lauda in Formula 1 movie Rush.
He followed that up by playing alongside man of the moment Benedict Cumberbatch in The Fifth Estate, the film about WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange.
But in the autumn of 2012 he played host to some of Hollywood’s biggest names in his home country in a film which is only now getting a release.
Set in contemporary Hamburg, A Most Wanted Man is both a tense spy thriller and a portrait of loneliness, adapted from the best-selling 2008 novel of the same name by John le Carre.
The loneliness element of the film has an added poignancy as its leading actor is Philip Seymour Hoffman, who died of a suspected accidental drug overdose in February of this year following a long battle with addiction.
Daniel describes his illustrious co-star as having “an aura” about him.
“He put himself in this mood and was very focused throughout.”
Other English-speaking actors in the cast include Rachel McAdams, Willem Dafoe and Robin Wright and Daniel was amused to see the boot on the other foot for a change, with his cast mates having to perform with German accents.
“Normally we have to try and speak with American or English accents and this time it’s the other way around!” he chuckles.
“It was great to see all these American actors having a dialect coach and learning a German accent.”
