Nick Heyward reveals all with 10 quick questions.
Which one person could you have not done without in your career?
My brother. Although I didn’t realise it at the time, his record collection has had such a strong influence on my songwriting over the years.
Were you savvy in the ’80s or did you get ripped off?
I wasn’t savvy in the ’80s, ’90s or ’00s. In fact I only got savvy last year, and it’s still something I have to work at every day.
Plans for a full Haircut 100 reform?
I’d love there to be a full reform again, but I’ve stopped trying. Meantime, my son often joins me on stage. I’m very proud of him.
You once said you had depression. Do you handle stress better now?
Yup. Weirdly, suffering can be a gift it’s when you grow as a person. There are lots of tools for managing stress nowadays and I’ve got them all nicely placed in my toolbox.
Do you enjoy gigging now as much as ever?
It’s more enjoyable now. I go at my own pace and dance to the beat of my own drum. I enjoy playing concert halls and theatres.
Has it taken a while to embrace the past?
Yes, but I like the past. Thankfully, in 1998 I tripped and fell into the present I’ve been here ever since.
Of your hits, Fantastic Day or Love Plus One?
I’ll go for Fantastic Day because it got us our first record deal.
Most romantic thing you’ve done?
I wrote an album about the love of my life soon to be released. The music, I mean, not the love of my life!
If you’d not been a performer, what would you have been good at?
I’d like to have been a detective. Bobbies run in the family, so it could have been my calling. There’s still time for a career change!
You have 24 hours left to live. How do you spend the time?
I think this question has brought my depression back. Ha-ha! I wouldn’t mind winning a Grammy, though.
