Musicians find inspiration from all manner of places.
And when it came time for The Pierces to begin writing their new album, they went to unusual lengths to rediscover their creativeness.
They enlisted a shaman who guided them on a spiritual journey in which they took ayahuasca, a hallucinogenic brew that is said to allow the drinker to peer behind the curtain of their soul.
“We wanted to find out more about ourselves, and we went to extreme experiences to do that,” explained Catherine, one half of the sisterly duo.
“Ayahuasca shows you the depths of your being.”
If that all sounds a little La La Land, you’d be right.
The Alabama-born siblings now reside in California and the influence shines through in new album, Creation, which is out tomorrow.
Allison said: “Being there must have affected our sound. Living in California feels like being on vacation the whole time.”
Creation is the follow-up to their breakthrough album, 2011’s You & I, which reached number four in the UK charts.
Featuring a host of radio anthems, it stayed in the charts for months and established the sisters as a headline act after years of struggling they had previously released three albums that failed to make much of an impact.
Catherine added: “This album is more joyful and uplifting. We know things are good when it just feels natural.”
The Pierces are out on the road to promote their new album, kicking off a 10-date UK tour with a show at Edinburgh Queen’s Hall on September 16, followed by The Sage in Gateshead the following evening
