The Ministry of Defence were accused of a land grab in the Firth of Clyde as part of the plan to upgrade the Polaris missile system. The naval base at Faslane needed more space to accommodate the Trident submarine system. Defence ministers had snapped up the area around Coulport to the fury of locals.
A meningitis outbreak in Lanarkshire killed four people. In the space of six months, 26 people had been struck down with the potentially deadly disease. Dr Tim McAllister of Glasgow’s Royal Hospital for Sick Children, said the spread of the disease was set to halt due to the warmer weather.
England triumphed over Scotland to win the Calcutta Cup. The 10-7 defeat at Twickenham meant the Scots were left with the Wooden Spoon. Ireland went on to lift the Five Nations Trophy.
