Lap of luxury: We all just love to splash the cash on our cats and dogs

ANDY MURRAY’S Cromlix Hotel has launched a menu of gourmet grub for dogs that includes salmon and meatloaf with chicken jelly.

Created by Albert Roux, the £10.50 meals can be ordered through room service at the five-star Perthshire venue.

While some cat and dog owners splash out on an occasional treat for their pets, others are now spending a fortune on luxury accessories for their animals.

Recent research suggests that British dog owners collectively spent more than £1 billion on “petcessories” last year – an average of £76 per animal.

And that’s excluding essential items like food and veterinary bills.

The study, by Direct Line Pet Insurance, found young pet owners are the most likely to splash out on cushions, collars and clothes for their pets, with 18 to 34-year-olds spending an average of £83.98 on each dog, compared with over-55s who spent £60.26.

Researchers estimated 3.6 million (26%) dog owners spend more than £100 a year on accessories for their dog.

Inevitably, an industry has developed to help provide our pets with things they didn’t realise they needed.

We’ve taken a look at some of the gifts and treats available to the well-heeled pet owner.

Sparkling Mystic Swarovski Crystal Couture Dog Dress: £4221.49

For those who really want to dress their dogs up with some bling, this hand-made dress includes more than 4,000 Swarovski crystals. Just make sure they don’t start rolling in the mud…

Dog Shaped Scratching Post: £65

Presumably this goes down well with cats who suffer from an inferiority complex when it comes to dogs. Something to get their claws into.

Dog Sofa: £815

Fed up with Fido taking up all the space on your couch? You could train him to stay on the floor or you could spend a fortune on his very own sofa.

Top Dog Tuxedo: £29.99

Most dog owners wouldn’t take their mutt near a formal occasion like a wedding, but those who feel the need will presumably want them well-dressed.

Peacock Dog Costume: £31

Dogs can enjoy a party as much as anyone, particularly if there are lots of crumbs to be hoovered up. But a fancy dress costume that makes them look like a peacock is surely a step too far.

Versace Cat Bowl: £568

Most cats seem happy to eat and drink out of pretty much anything, so will they notice they are using a highly decorated porcelain cat bowl?

Cat Genie Self Washing Cat Box: £242.88

Cats are particular about their personal hygiene, so this box that flushes, washes and dries itself will suit even the fussiest feline.

Sherlock Holmes style dog coat: £60

A coat to protect your pet against inclement weather is a sensible idea. Right up to the point you add a deerstalker hat to the ensemble.

Personalised Fleece Blanket: £12.95

Somewhere out there are dogs so talented they can read their own name. This is for them.
