British TV institution is a must-see for our scandinavian cousins.
People have died by being bombarded with bottles or crushed by cheese. But surely there can’t be anything crazier than a Midsomer Murders episode featuring the stars of The Killing and Borgen?
It’s for real, though, as ITV’s quirky detective drama is, bizarrely, a massive hit in Denmark.
And that’s resulted in a collaboration to mark the show’s milestone 100th episode this week, with Ann Eleonora Jorgensen from The Killing and Birgitte Hjort Sorensen from Borgen.
“Midsomer is absolutely massive there,” says Neil Dudgeon, who plays DCI Barnaby. Something like 80% of households in Denmark own a Midsomer DVD. For them, it’s really cool.”
The special episode sees the English coppers travel to Denmark after a Midsomer resident’s body is found in the Danish capital.
“In Copenhagen the interest was amazing,” confides Neil. “Apart from all the press interest we had about three or four different mayors come to see us.
“Ann said that when she was doing The Killing her family were saying, ‘That’s nice, another bit of telly’.
“But when she got this they were like, ‘Oh my God, you’re going to be in Midsomer Murders!’ They were so excited. We filmed at the police station used in The Killing.
“There were several of the cast and I really did think I could have been in an episode of it. What they didn’t realise was that we were big fans of it and we were just as excited to be with them as they were with us.”
Midsomer Murders, ITV, Wednesday at 8pm.
