As anyone with a car can testify, finding a parking space isn’t always easy.
One solution is to put those needing a space in touch with those who have one but don’t need it.
Last year, home and business owners across the UK earned more than £2 million by renting out their unused parking spaces, according to a company which helps people find parking spots.
Customers of YourParkingSpace.co.uk rent out a variety of parking spaces through the site, including driveways, private off-street parking spaces, lock-up garages and spaces from commercial car park operators.
Sophia Laurent from Edinburgh earns £140 a month from an underground parking space just 10 minutes walk from George Street and Princes Street.
She says the rental income helps take the pressure off when it comes to meeting her monthly bills.
“I first read about the idea of renting out my parking space online.
“I was initially a little worried about what type of person I’d be renting out the space to, but I needn’t have worried as the parker has never caused any problems and I’ve experienced no problems.
“For me the real benefit is the extra income, but it’s also nice to know that someone is getting some benefit from my space rather than it just sitting empty all day.”
Those who live near high profile event and sports venues could benefit the most from renting out a parking space.
One woman who lives close to Wembley, for example, earns £15 a day for each space whenever events are held at Wembley Stadium.
