A driver who posted a photo of himself driving down the road with the detachable steering wheel of his modified Volkswagen hanging from the window has suffered a crash just weeks later.
Ryan Fane posted both incidents to Instagram, leading to confusion over the timings of both – with his Instagram feed suggesting the crash was a direct result of his action.

Unsurprisingly, detaching your steering wheel while on the move is illegal – if caught, Fane would likely have faced a charge of careless driving or even the more serious charge of dangerous driving.
Fane posted his own account of the crash after it happened, after the photographs began circulating the internet. He said: “… I lost control of the car due to some spilled oil/diesel on the road. Not to mention the poor weather conditions of the day.
“The front end slid out, causing me to go onto the grass verge and then collide with the sign.
“The photo of me driving with my steering wheel out the window was a month ago (4th November) and the accident was yesterday (1st December). Clearly shows the steering wheel photo had nothing to do with the crash.”
Fane appears to have crashed into the road sign on approach to the Crawley Interchange, M23 Junction 10. According to his post, the lowered and modified VW Lupo he was driving is a write-off and will be broken for parts and scrapped.
