Police in Corpus Christi, Texas, have released footage from one of their in-car cameras showing the moment officers and motorists joined forces in a bid to free a driver from the burning wreckage of his crashed car.
The footage, captured in the early hours of New Year’s Day, show the aftermath of an incident in which a car was hit by another vehicle travelling the wrong way on State Highway 358.
The car fell onto its side and quickly caught alight.
Police were quick to arrive, and joined forces with passing motorists who had stopped to help. They can be seen trying to reach through the car’s sunroof to try and pull the occupants to safety, but were unsuccessful.
Before long, eight bystanders could be seen rocking the car back and forwards in a bid to get it onto its wheels and facilitate an escape. They were successful, and a rescue operation was soon mounted.
According to the Corpus Christi police department, the driver of the vehicle travelling the wrong way was 28-year-old Richard Lopez, who died at the scene. The four people in the burning vehicle were taken to hospital for their injuries.
