Former BBC weather girl loves lounging by the pool and soaking up the sun.
Cat Cubie shot to fame as the nation’s favourite and most glamorous weather girl. After obtaining a degree in psychology, she turned her hand to presenting. Cat started off behind the scenes but quickly worked her way up the career ladder to achieve her dream of being on screen. Her big break came in 2010, when she stormed on to the nation’s TV sets at prime time on BBC Reporting Scotland as a weather girl. Since leaving the Scotland map behind three years ago, she’s sheared sheep on countryside show Landward and covered sports on Sky. More recently, the 32-year-old has turned her attention to supporting charities and compering major Scottish events. She also runs her own online blog A Wee Bird Told Me. Cat lives in Glasgow’s West End with fianc Oli Norman. The pair got engaged on Hogmanay. She tells the Sunday Post about her favourite breaks.
“My favourite holiday has to be Mauritius. I went with Oli in November 2012. It was our first beach holiday together.
We usually tend to go on more active trips so Oli took a while to come round, but he did eventually and it worked out to be a perfect break for us.
It was an absolute paradise, with beautiful beaches picture emerald sea lapping icing sugar sand, lined with palm trees and clear blue skies. Exactly like the photos in the holiday brochures promised only better!
It was the epitome of relaxation. I love lounging around the pool or soaking up the sun on the beach. But there was tonnes to do which was great for Oli as he can’t sit still for long!
We went for many runs along the beach and made the most of the crystal clear water by trying out swimming, sailing, scuba diving, kayaking and wakeboarding.
And we spent a day at the safari park where you can hang out with lions, zebras, wildebeasts and 120-year-old turtles.
It wasn’t a million miles away from Blair Drummond Safari Park back home except it was (well, almost)!
Of course, being an island, Mauritius can suffer from some real inclement weather a bit like Scotland. But we were quite lucky and had sun all the way through.
Mauritius is also steeped in incredible history and, being a bit of a geek, I loved learning about that too.
It was first captured by the Dutch, then commandeered by the French, then the Brits laid their sun hats on it and brought trade and roads and sensible things, like driving on the left-hand side.
As well as being an idyllic, cultured place, Mauritius has some of the loveliest, warm-hearted people in the world, which just added to the experience.
We came home feeling refreshed and revitalised that’s why I loved it so much. It felt like a once in a lifetime trip, but we often talk about going back.
I also loved the Azores such a beautiful place, green and lush and authentic. And Portugal the people, the vibe and its cheapness. Each year we try to go out to Nendaz in Switzerland to ski and snowboard.
It’s lovely to do a long day on the slopes and then cosy up with mulled wine and a fondue. The views of the Alps are also incredible. The mountains make you feel so small, but it’s as pretty as a picture!”
