AT the table with me was Piers Morgan, and sitting nearby was Orlando Bloom.
Harrison Ford strolled in, while Bond director Sam Mendes was just getting seated.
For a moment, I thought I was in some sort of fancy restaurant in London.
But this was smack-bang in the middle of Los Angeles.
I was at another red carpet event and fancy dinner but this was BAFTA’S Britannia Awards, and one of my favourite events.
The academy honours Anglo-American film and telly, and turns a wee bit of La-La Land into a wee bit of Britain.
I said to Piers it was great to be surrounded by the great and the good . . . as well as him!
He loves a bit of banter I’m looking forward to being his colleague on Good Morning Britain.
A lot of people have their opinions on Piers but he knows exactly what people think of him.
Last year at the dinner I was served a Scotch egg for starter very British.
Don’t get me wrong it was a fancy Scotch egg, but a Scotch egg nonetheless!
One character on telly I’m sure who would be able to make a Scotch egg no bother is Mrs Patmore, the cook from Downton Abbey.
She’s played by the brilliant Lesley Nicol and she was on great form at the do, despite looking a wee bit lost.
I asked her if she was good at these award ceremonies.
“No,” she laughed. “I get a bit shy.
“But I know you, so I felt better as soon as I saw you.
“My husband usually has to push me along the line at the red carpet.
“I might have to employ him to shove me along as best as possible!”
Of course Downton Abbey is finishing after six wonderful series, and I wanted to know how Lesley got on.
“I did the final episode scenes the other day and I’m sorry to say I had a meltdown,” she said.
“This poor crew member! I hardly knew him, but I had to fling myself at him while absolutely sobbing.
“It was really upsetting!”
I wondered how Jack Whitehall would get on presenting the Awards would Americans get the 27-year-old’s sense of humour.
But he proved anyone who doubted he could pull it off by putting in a cracking performance.
He made one particularly good joke about the number of movies coming out about Apple technology guru, Steve Jobs.
One came out starring Ashton Kutcher in 2013, now there’s another in cinemas starring Michael Fassbender.
Jack said we don’t need any more because they only slightly improve on the previous ones . . . a bit like Apple technology!
