ITV’s hit four-part series Safe House hasn’t ended well (warning: spoilers).
It was heralded as ‘The Next Broadchurch’ when it first hit our screens last month.
The similarities were striking: a remote location (check), a brooding police officer haunted by his past (check), played by a former Doctor Who actor (check), a child abduction (check..sort of).
The first three episodes were gripping, atmospheric and compelling.
The ending was not.
Spoiler warning: with young (Max True) Joe’s dad dead, and the whodunnit about Robert’s (Christopher Eccleston) past revealed, the big moment was meant to be that Mark (Paterson Joseph) was Robert’s wife (Marsha Thomason) Katy’s brother.
In what way this was to be jaw-droppingly shocking remains unclear.
The final scene shows Robert swimming in the sea with his typically brooding expression.
Roll the end credits, and the end of the series.
And cue the fury online…

Did the #safehouse writers just pop out for lunch and forget to come back to the office again? What a useless ending.

Disappointed with the ending to #SafeHouse

One day ITV drama writers won't get to the final episode, get bored, shrug and decide "that'll do as an ending". #safehouse

I enjoyed #safehouse, great acting, but like so many dramas, the ending made me think *why did I bother*.
