A READER tipped Scone Spy off about a charming place that does all manner of scones.
I’m on it right away and arrange to meet a friend there scones have given me mates all over the land.
However, when we get there, the tip-off in question is closed.
It’s cold. It’s rainy. So we run around the corner to the nearest cafe.
Scones are not this establishment’s speciality. That would be too much to hope for.
No, we’ve found ourselves in Chambrier, a creperie in Broughty Ferry, just outside Dundee.
Just as Scone Spy lives for scones, Chambrier just can’t get enough of all things pancake.
Whether you want savoury or sweet, there’s an option here for you.
Maybe it will surprise you, but I consider myself an expert in crepes, as well as anything scone-related.
They take me back to a fabulous holiday in France, where there was a crepe stall on the street where we stayed.
Well, the crepes were out of this world. And the seller wasn’t half-bad either!
By the time I boarded the ferry back to Scotland, my belt buckle had to be loosened a notch or two. (Andrew Cawley / DC Thomson)
So would Chambrier’s crepes live up to those lovely memories of French fancies?
My friend asks our friendly waiter if his crepes are any good. He says we’ll soon find out and I’m wondering what to expect.
Of course, only a man who’s perky with a pancake pan would make such frivolous jokes.
Happily, the crepes didn’t leave me feeling flat. They’re superb.
The savoury option of egg, ham and Emmental is a cheesy, melty delight.
Equally, the made-to-order sweet sensation my friend dreams up cinnamon, butter and sugar with banana is delish.
And she boasts that at least her choice is a healthy option.
Hmm. Not exactly salad, love, is it?
Chambrier is a cosy wee place, perfect for a chilly day.
It’s the kind of cafe where you could while away a whole afternoon quite easily.
It’s a wee bit quirky and off the wall. And all the better for it.
It’s a fairly new venue. Let’s hope they succeed.
I know what you’re thinking. How could I desert my beloved scones for a mere pancake?
Not at all. I still found a wee space for a cheeky wee fruit scone.
And perfectly nice it was, too.
Variety is the spice of life, that’s what I say.
