Speculation is mounting that power company Drax is to buy a number of Scottish Power assets.
The sale would confirm moves to diversify away from coal-burning power generation.
The company said last month it was in discussions with Spain’s Iberdrola, Scottish Power’s parent company, to potentially buy renewable hydro and gas-fired generation assets.
Drax, which owns the UK’s biggest power plant in North Yorkshire, has sought to move away from coal ahead of the national deadline of 2025 to phase out the most carbon-intensive form of power generation.
The company has converted four of its six generating units to burn wood pellets instead of coal, with the last of these completed in August.
An announcement could be made as early as Tuesday.
