Singing star Susan Boyle has revealed she uses her £300,000 second home as an “overflow wardrobe”.
SuBo described the house as the biggest treat she’s ever given herself but soon moved back into the former council house where she had lived with her mum.
Now it appears a newfound love of fashion has left her with a storage issue and she is using the detached villa in Blackburn to house her collection of clothes.
The once-dowdy singer, who is worth an estimated £11 million, admitted to being “frightened” to spend when she hit the big time.
However, she’s since talked of spending £1,000 on clothes in shopping sprees at M&S and is regularly spotted in designer brands. She’s also spoken of having new wardrobes fitted to house her collection of fabulous garments.
In an interview published on a fan website, the star said: “I bought my family home and then the ‘posh’ house. But then I realised I didn’t want to be away from the house I grew up in so I use it as an office, rehearsal space and overflow wardrobe.”
She bought her family home, also in Blackburn, from West Lothian Council for £65,000 in 2009 and is said to have recently acquired the former council house next door for expansion.
The fashion-conscious star is also a bit of a hoarder when it comes to her precious threads. Last year she spent £250 buying her clothes back from a charity shop after deciding she wanted to keep garments that had been donated by her assistant.
However, Subo says she remains a careful spender: “In terms of treats, I’m not one to spend money. Remember for 47 years I lived struggling to make ends meet.
“For a cheap pair of shoes I’d have to save for weeks. When you’ve lived like that it’s a difficult transition to suddenly spend, spend, spend.
“I never want to be in a position where I’m fretting on how I’m going to pay the bills. I spent time sitting in the cold and dark and never want to do that again.”
But while the 53-year-old claims she is reluctant to spoil herself, she enjoys splashing the cash on others.
She said: “I like to treat friends with surprise trips to spas or a favourite bottle of perfume.
“I love to see the happiness in their faces. I prefer spoiling others than myself.”
SuBo, who once said she’d “never been kissed”, also made a cryptic comment about “unrequited love” when discussing her music, suggesting she might have had a soft spot for a mystery man.
The Scots star, who has just finished a sell-out UK tour, said she’s done more in the past five years than in the first 47 of her life.
SuBo, who is due to star as a lighthouse keeper in an upcoming TV drama, also hinted she’d like to act, saying she’d like to do “more TV/movie work” in future.
