The aim of the worldwide event, created by UNESCO, is to recognise the significance of books and authors and to encourage people to read regularly.
The date also marks the birth and death dates of many notable writers including Cervantes, William Shakespeare and Maurice Druon.
In the UK, the event is usually celebrated at the beginning of March in order to avoid clashing with school Easter holidays.

To find out more about how literacy, books and authors are supported in Scotland, we spoke to Creative Scotland’s Director of Arts and Engagement Leonie Bell.
She also reveals five contemporary Scottish authors that are worth looking out for.
