The Tokyo 2020 Olympics is to be postponed until next year due to the coronavirus outbreak.
The decision to host the games in 2021 was made by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the Japanese Government and the Tokyo 2020 Organising Committee.
The decision comes after Australia and Canada withdrew their athletes from the 2020 Games on Monday, with the United States and Team GB indicating that they would do the same.
It was confirmed on Tuesday that the Japanese Government were in preparation to postpone the 32nd Olympic Games until next year after Japan’s Prime Minister, Shinzo Abe, held a conference call with the IOC president, Thomas Bach, and the Organising Committee president, Yoshiro Mori.
This is the first time the Olympics have been postponed during peacetime.
Multiple countries across the world are now in lockdown to mitigate the spread of Covid-19.
The virus had also hindered athletes’ preparations for the Games.
