A SPECIAL edition whisky is set to be released in celebration of the thirtieth anniversary of Inspector Rebus.
Author Ian Rankin, who created the character, chose the cask for the Highland Park single malt on a visit to their distillery on Orkney in 2007.
The whisky’s flavour profile was judged to be to the Edinburgh detective’s tastes – ‘dark, complex and with a long finish’.
Ten years later, the Rebus30 single malt is ready for release.
Jason R. Craig, Highland Park’s Brand Director, said: “Our brief was to craft a 10 year old single malt fit for an iconic detective who truly stands apart. The result is stunning single malt created by Gordon Motion, our Master Whisky Maker and a tribute to those with a strong independent spirit and those who know their own mind.
“Best shared with friends or when enjoying a dark crime novel!”
Rebus first appeared in the 1987 novel Knots and Crosses.
The detective has been the main character in 21 novels and various short stories, and was played by John Hannah and Ken Stott in TV adaptations.
The commemorative bottle will be available for £30, delivered at the end of June – in time for RebusFest, a festival of literature, music, art and film in Edinburgh.
It takes place over the weekend of 30 June to 2 July.
Announcing the event earlier this year, Ian Rankin said: “I had no idea when I published Knots and Crosses in 1987 that Rebus would still be sharing his adventures – and misadventures – with me thirty years later. It’s a thrill to be spending 2017 celebrating the man, his legacy, and his taste in music.
“Central to this is RebusFest – a weekend festival in Edinburgh of all things Rebus. I just hope he enjoys all the hoopla – I need him to still be speaking to me afterwards…”
Rankin curated the event, which will include interactive events, walking tours, screenings and food and drink.
Tickets for the events are available to purchase from www.ianrankin.net/rebusfest.
