Beauty boss: Age is no barrier to great skin – you may just need a little help

Finding the right beauty products for your 40s, 50s, 60s and beyond is a whole new ballgame, according to author and entrepreneur Karen Davis, as the menopause plays havoc on skin, fine lines and wrinkles become more pronounced, and that healthy glow gets harder to achieve.

And with many beauty brands making the mistake of thinking midlife women simply want to look “young”, scouring the shelves in high street chemists can become a feat of endurance.

Here, Davis, who curates an award-winning beauty box for women over 40, shares her must-have products to help you look and feel amazing every day.

Sun protection

The main cause of fine lines and wrinkles is sun damage, advises Davis, so prevention is better than cure. She recommends adding The Organic Pharmacy Cellular Protection Sunscreen (£20) to your routine.

“This mineral sunscreen is perfect for everyday use and as an SPF50 is exactly what you need – even in Scotland,” she added.

Eyes

Davis recommends trying Murad’s Retinol Youth Renewal Eye Serum (£73) to keep your peepers looking perfect.

She continued: “We are so expressive with our eyes and the skin is so thin here, it’s hardly surprising so many of our fine lines are around this area. In a Murad trial, 93% of women who used the Youth Renewal Eye Serum saw a reduction in lines in just four weeks.”

For an “open eye look”, opt for Code Beautiful’s VLM Mascara (£22). Davis added: “Eyes can ‘shrink’ back into sockets as we get older but this mascara is your ultimate weapon. It lengthens, volumises, thickens, curls and doesn’t ‘drop’, leaving you looking panda-eyed. The only mascara you’ll ever need.”

Hair

“Philip Kingsley’s Elasticiser (£37) is in our January box right now, said Davis. “Elasticiser stands the test of time to super condition hair – but don’t use it like a conditioner! Use before you shampoo as a pre-hair wash treatment for best results.”

Neck

With fewer oil glands, the skin on the neck needs a specialist product.

Davis explained: “It’s different to the skin on your face, so it makes sense to use a cream created for the neck and decolletage.

“The Strivectin TL Advance Tightening Neck Cream Plus (£79) is a global best-seller and TOYL subscribers loved it in our February 2022 box.”
