What’s this, a new TV project from the director who gave us Alien, Blade Runner and Gladiator? Excuse me, get in my eyes immediately.
I was practically vibrating with excitement prior to watching Ridley Scott’s sci-fi series, which premiered on Sky Atlantic last week.
Ridley hasn’t made anything interesting in 20 years other than curiously bad Alien sequels, and sadly Raised By Wolves belongs to the same school attended by Prometheus and Alien: Covenant. A school which, as anyone who saw those films would attest, should be shut down by Ofsted.
Here, two androids set out for a new planet because Earth is a bit of a busted flush. The idea is to raise a new group of young people with special powers. This all takes place in an unfamiliar world which at least gives Scott a chance to show off some stunning alien landscapes.
An interplanetary Wish You Were Here, however, this is not. Our shiny androids, Mother and Father, start to raise their deeply cute toddlers but the children are depressingly picked off by various things. Well, it is nearly Christmas!
Like a lot of Ridley Scott’s recent films, the emotional stuff seems like an afterthought. He’s more concerned with lovely camera work and weird, stilted dialogue which leaves you with more questions than answers. Raised By Wolves perhaps need a bit more bite.
Raised By Wolves Sky Atlantic, Saturday, 9pm
