Rangers produced yet another stunning result in Europe and there is plenty to thank Allan McGregor for.
Once again, he was in outstanding form.
His penalty save from Aleksandar Katai was brilliant and, overall, he was commanding for the 90 minutes.
It’s hard to believe there was talk a couple of weeks ago about leaving him out of the team. That sounds very silly, right now.
I never bought into that thought process. Yes, he has made mistakes this season, notably against Ross County and Motherwell but these things happen.
It’s nothing to do with his age. He is 40 but he is still one of the best around and Rangers need him.
We will wait and see if he is going to sign a new contract or hang up his gloves.
I hope he plays on as I feel he has plenty to offer. I’m sure Giovanni van Bronckhorst will want him to put pen to paper as soon as possible.
Allan will be important in the game on Thursday in Serbia. Yes, Rangers are in a very strong position but there is still work to be done.
They can’t give Red Star a glimmer of hope so keeping things tight in the opening stages will be crucial.
I’m confident Rangers will get the job done as they deserved to win at Ibrox.
Sure, Red Star may feel unlucky as they had three goals disallowed but VAR made the right call on all of them.
But Red Star will be hurting and that means they will be dangerous.
However, I expect Rangers to be in the draw for the quarter-final. It will be some achievement. I don’t think they should be afraid of any team.
That doesn’t mean to say I expect them to get to the Final.
It’s in Seville on May 18 but I wouldn’t be encouraging any Rangers fans to book their flights and hotels just yet!
However, we also know never to rule Rangers out when it comes to European football.
Under Steven Gerrard they achieved some remarkable results and they are doing it again under Giovanni.
But they need to put that to one side and focus on the Scottish Cup game away to Dundee today. That’s the priority, right now.
It’s been well documented about how frustrated and disappointed everyone at the club is at not having won a cup competition in recent years.
Today gives them a chance to book a place back at Hampden Park for a semi-final. That’s a big enough incentive for any player.
After beating Borussia Dortmund they dropped points in their league fixtures on both weekends and they can’t afford to do that again. Dundee might be bottom of the SPFL Premiership but they will feel they can cause an upset in this tie.
Mark McGhee will have his players ready and drilled to win the game. He will not be wanting to settle for second best.
But they face a Rangers team in wonderful form and many of their players are playing at a high level right now.
Alfredo Morelos is scoring, Ryan Kent is lively and then they have McGregor keeping clean sheets. There are many positives.
Celtic also face a big Cup game and they are on Tayside tomorrow night to face Dundee United.
That has the makings of a cracker and Ange Postecoglou will be relishing it.
With the League Cup already in the trophy cabinet and sitting top of the table, Ange will have his eyes on every domestic prize.
There is no doubt Celtic will take some stopping but they will also have to work hard to get their results. Ange is a winner and he does not like to be second best.
That’s why, as we now head deep into the business end of the season, there are many things in Scottish football to be excited about.
The league has many plots going on and the Cup always throws up something special.
We then have Europe to look forward to in midweek and Rangers are doing the country proud on that front at the moment.
