The season for glitz, glamour and glitter may be over for another year, but that doesn’t mean we have to say goodbye to our favourite super-shine make-up.
Highlighted cheekbones and a dewy complexion will still be a key trend for 2020, especially once spring weather breaks through the clouds, providing the perfect excuse to swipe on a skin-sculpting powder or cream.
Here, Pablo Rodriguez, director of artistry at Illamasqua, shares his tips for adding a little sparkle and shine.
How to apply
Available as powder, liquid and cream, highlighter is a light-reflecting product that helps make your skin look lighter, brighter and more sculpted. If you want Kate Moss-worthy cheekbones, grab your highlighter!
If you’re using a new powder product for the first time, Pablo says it couldn’t be easier to apply.
He explained: “Pick up the powder with a blusher brush and shake off any excess, then apply to the skin and blend.
“To minimise skin texture, it is better to polish the skin with circular movements rather than adding too much product.”
Liquid lessons
Highlighter is fantastic for creating a soft, dewy finish to your skin – and Pablo says the key to a healthy glow is all about the right combination.
“I like to mix highlighter with foundation first, so there is an overall glow on the skin,” he explained. “Then I’ll add a few extra accents with a small blending brush.”
Naturally dramatic
Pink, gold and bronze-toned highlighter can instantly update your look, providing both a natural or striking finish.
Pablo said: “Pre-mixing highlighter with a liquid foundation will give you a more natural look.
“For something a little more intense, apply the highlighter as a finishing touch.”
Less is more
Shining powder, liquid drops and cream-based formulas can be applied to bridge of your nose, the cheekbones, inner eye, and just above the eyebrows to enhance your natural beauty.
But Pablo warns to be careful of using too much product.
He said: “Too much product sitting on the skin is a common mistake when applying highlighter.
“I like when the skin has a credible radiance, just making it look healthier.”
Finishing touches
Pablo said: “I like a pearlised finish – not too frosted and not too wet. Illamasqua’s Beyond Powder (£34) give you exactly that effect and comes in many different shades, so you can tailor it to your skin tone.”
