35-year-old Whittaker, who played Beth Latimer in the ITV drama, has also starred in St Trinian’s and Cranford.
Broadchurch creator Chris Chibnall takes over the executive producer position next year, with Capaldi’s departure coinciding with the end of head writer and executive producer Steven Moffatt’s seven-year reign at the helm.
Capaldi’s final episode, ending his four-year stint as the Twelfth Doctor, will be this year’s festive spectacular.
It will feature David Bradley as the First Doctor, originally played by the late William Hartnell.
