A SUMMER festival will offer an “eclectic mix” of more than 400 events, including a performance by Chaka Khan, organisers have announced.
The “queen of funk” will perform live with a full band at the Kelvingrove Bandstand in Glasgow on June 4 as part of the opening party of the city’s West End Festival 2017.
Events will take place in 75 venues across the west end during the extravaganza, which runs from June 2 to June 25.
Other highlights include Kool and the Gang on June 9 and Chic featuring Nile Rodgers on June 11.
There will be a new free family event on June 11 in Kelvingrove Park – The Big Sunday – featuring activities, food and drink, music, a skateboard competition, funfair rides and street games.
West End Festival chairman Liz Scobie said: “We’re thrilled to announce the programme for our 22nd festival, with so many new and exciting events.
“We can’t ignore the fact the parade won’t be returning this year, but as costs increase year on year, it is just not possible.
“The West End Festival is almost a month long, jam-packed with an eclectic mix of events.
“It’s about different venues and people from across Glasgow and beyond, coming to the west end to enjoy the very best of talent, unique venues and the fun atmosphere it creates every year.”
The second “Voice @ the Bandstand” will take place on June 24 – a free celebration of singing with at least ten choirs and choral groups.
New for 2017 is a series of free community events supported by the National Lottery “Awards for All”.
These will be at the newly-created pedestrian zone in Vinicombe Street, outside the Art Galleries and in the Botanic Gardens.
The Open Air Ceilidh will be on June 4, with a repeat on June 10, while the Bandstand Cinema Club will run from June 5-8.
Festival director Michael Dale said: “Kelvingrove Bandstand once again plays a key role in outdoor music events and has a packed programme.
“Local community gala days are also prominent, from Maryhill to Partick and areas in between.
On the final day of the festival, vintage buses will operate all around the west end area to and from the Riverside Museum of Transport.
