The largest private collection of early works by the artist Peter Howson has fetched nearly £30,000 at auction in Glasgow.
Dozens of pastels, charcoal and pencil drawings spanning the artist’s career from his school days to the present day went under the hammer at McTear’s Scottish Contemporary Art Auction.
An early pastel sketch of the late former England goalkeeper Gordon Banks fetched £280, while a pencil drawing of former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, entitled Naked Power, made £410.
Other pieces – some sketched on plain lined paper – included a selection of early self-portraits, as the sale made a total of £29,000.
Howson, 61, was born in London but moved to Scotland in his childhood.
One of the so-called New Glasgow Boys who emerged from the city’s art school in the 1980s, he has produced more than 1,000 paintings with a combined value estimated in excess of £50 million.
His work has been collected by celebrities including Madonna, Mick Jagger, Jack Nicholson, Robbie Coltrane and the late David Bowie.
